Netta Skog Flies in from Finland to Play La Plaza Park

Netta Skog is generally considered one of the very best digital accordionists in the world. Her history of awards attest to that.

At 15 years old, Netta won the 2005 Finnish diatonic competition. In 2006, she won Finland’s Golden Accordion Competition which established her as the best accordion player in the country. In 2012, Netta won the Roland V-Accordion Nordic Championship. And,  in 2015, she won the World Championship in Digital Accordion.

What makes Netta unique is the history of her versatility and the scope of her experience. At 17 years old, she joined the Viking Metal band Turisas, one of the premier metal bands of Europe and toured the world with them for four years. I asked Netta. “What room is there in a metal band for an accordion?” Netta told me that all bands in Finland, no matter the genre, have an accordion. I thought, of course, they all should. Shouldn’t that be the case everywhere?

After Turisas, Netta toured with another Viking Metal band, Ensiferum. That experience took her traveling for another three years. She has since branched out, displaying her versatility even more.

Netta has been touring with a partner doing Stratovarius music, and traveling with another partner doing traditional music. Netta also has started exploring pop music and movie soundtracks. And, not too tired of being on the road, she signed with Circus de Soleil and started performing in Arabia.

Finland has an abundance of great female accordion players. Tiia Karttunen, Viivi Maria Saarenkyla and Maria Kalaniemi are all world class players. At the top of that group is Netta Skog. We are so grateful to be able to be hosting her in Cotati this year.  We are looking forward to finding out what surprises she has in store for us this August.
